Your first Botox appointment doesn't have to be intimidating. At TRU Integrative Wellness in Downers Grove, most first-time patients are surprised by how short, painless, and conversational the whole thing is. Here's exactly what to expect — start to finish.
Before You Come In: How to Prep
3–7 days before:
- Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements if possible (with your doctor's OK): aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo, and high-dose garlic. These all increase bruising risk.
- Skip alcohol the night before — same reason.
The day of:
- Come with a clean face if possible (we'll cleanse anyway).
- Eat normally — no need to fast.
- Bring a list of any medications and supplements you're taking.
- Plan to skip a hard workout for the rest of the day.
Arriving at the Clinic
We're at 4121 Fairview Avenue, Suite 103, Downers Grove, IL 60515, with free on-site parking. Most first-time patients are in and out in under 45 minutes total, including the consultation.
Step 1: The Consultation (10–15 minutes)
Your injector will:
- Review your medical history, medications, and any past cosmetic treatments
- Take a few photos for your private treatment chart
- Ask you to make a series of expressions — raise your brows, frown, smile, squint — so we can watch how your muscles actually move
- Discuss your goals: full smoothing, soft softening, brow lift, preventative dosing, etc.
- Recommend a dose and product (Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin) — and give you a transparent price quote
If we don't think Botox is right for you, we'll say so. That happens more often than you'd think — sometimes filler, microneedling, or skincare is the better answer.
Step 2: The Treatment (10–15 minutes)
Here's the part most people are nervous about — and almost everyone says, "Wait, that's it?" afterward.
- Cleanse and mark. We cleanse the area and (sometimes) mark precise injection points.
- Optional numbing. Botox uses ultra-fine needles. Most patients don't need numbing, but we offer ice if you'd like.
- Inject. A series of quick pinches across each treatment area. The full set of injections usually takes 5–10 minutes.
- Check. We make sure injection points are dotted off, then you're done.
What it feels like: a tiny pinch and sometimes a brief stinging sensation, especially near the eyes and forehead. Most patients rate it 1–2 out of 10 on a pain scale.
Step 3: Immediate Aftercare (the next 24 hours)
Do:
- Sit upright for 4 hours after treatment
- Make exaggerated facial expressions a few times in the first hour (helps Botox bind to the targeted muscles)
- Apply ice if you're swollen or bruised at any injection point
- Use gentle skincare
Don't:
- Lie flat or do face-down yoga for 4 hours
- Rub, press, or massage the treated area for 24 hours
- Work out hard for 24 hours
- Drink alcohol for the rest of the day (increases bruising risk)
- Get facials, microneedling, or laser treatments for 2 weeks
Step 4: Results Timeline
- Days 1–3: Usually nothing visible. You might feel a faint heaviness around treated areas — totally normal.
- Days 3–5: First subtle softening begins.
- Days 7–10: Most of the effect has set in. This is when most people start commenting that you "look rested."
- Day 14: Full result. This is what you should evaluate.
- Week 12–16: Effect gradually wears off, and it's time for your next visit.
Common First-Timer Questions
Will I bruise?
Maybe — small pinpoint bruises are common, especially around the eyes. They typically resolve in 2–4 days. Concealer covers easily.
Can I work out the same day?
Light walking, sure. Hard workouts (lifting, HIIT, hot yoga) wait 24 hours.
Will I look weird the next morning?
No — Botox doesn't kick in that fast. You won't see a noticeable change for 3–5 days.
What if I don't like it?
We schedule a free 2-week follow-up for all first-time patients. If your dose is too light, we top up (no surprise — we often intentionally start conservative). If something feels off, we'll address it. Botox always wears off completely in 3–4 months — there's no permanent commitment.
How much will it cost?
Most first treatments at TRU run $240–$700 depending on areas treated. We'll quote you exactly before any injection happens. See our Downers Grove Botox cost guide for more detail.
How many units will I need?
Depends on the area and your muscle strength. See our unit-by-area guide for typical doses.
Should I get Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin?
Honestly — start with Botox for most first-timers. Read our full comparison if you'd like the detail.
What Sets a Great First Appointment Apart
- A real consultation. Not just "where do you want it?" — a careful look at your actual muscle movement.
- Conservative starting doses. It's far easier to add than to take away. Good injectors err on the lighter side at visit one.
- A 2-week follow-up. Standard at TRU. Lets us perfect your dose.
- Transparent pricing. Per-unit, quoted before treatment, no surprise upsells.
