A "lip flip" is one of the smallest, most-requested Botox tweaks we do at our Downers Grove clinic. Four to six units, fifteen seconds of injecting, and your upper lip looks subtly fuller — without any filler.
What Is a Lip Flip?
A tiny dose of Botox is placed along the upper lip border to relax the orbicularis oris — the muscle that pulls your upper lip down when you smile. As the muscle eases, the lip rolls slightly outward, showing more pink lip and softening a gummy smile.
Lip Flip vs Lip Filler
| Lip Flip (Botox) | Lip Filler | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Rolls upper lip outward | Adds actual volume |
| Result | Subtle, natural pout | Visibly fuller lips |
| Lasts | 6–8 weeks | 6–12 months |
| Downtime | None | 1–3 days of swelling |
| Cost | ~$60–$110 | ~$650–$900 per syringe |
Who Is a Good Candidate?
- You want a slightly fuller upper lip without committing to filler
- Your upper lip disappears when you smile
- You have a gummy smile and want to soften it
- You're curious about lip enhancement and want a low-risk test drive
How Many Units?
4–6 units, placed in 4 tiny points along the upper lip. Read our complete Botox units guide for other areas.
Results & Downtime
- Onset: 3–5 days
- Peak: 7–14 days
- Duration: 6–8 weeks (shorter than other Botox areas because the muscle is small and constantly used)
- Downtime: None
What to Expect Afterward
For the first week, some patients notice their upper lip feels slightly different when sipping from a straw or pronouncing "P" or "B" sounds. This is normal and resolves quickly. Avoid puckering exercises for 24 hours.
Combining With Filler
A lip flip on top of a small amount of filler is one of our most-requested combinations — natural shape from filler, subtle outward roll from the flip. We'll talk through both options at your consultation.
